Hacienda de San Antonio, the sister property of Cuixmala, is set in the midst of magnificent landscaped grounds at the foot of the majestic Volcan de Fuego, the 19th century hacienda is tucked away in the highlands of western Mexico. The two storey property lies on a 470 acre expanse within a 5,000 acre working ranch, organic farm, stables, coffee plantation and cheese making factory. Twenty-two suites and three grand suites all with a terrace or balcony offer comfort, tranquility and privacy. Our guests are informed about the local environment and the work of our sister property’s “Cuixmala Ecological Foundation” (FECx) and the Chamela-Cuixmala Biosphere Reserve the first reserve of its kind in Mexico.

Local communities support

85% of the staff and workers are from the local villages. This is a way to support the local community, where unemployment and poverty is high. Most employees live within 1-10 kms from the Hacienda, and thus provide a more genuine experience to our guests of the traditions of this part of Mexico, including the local festivities, like the Day of Saint Anthony, June 13th. Hacienda de San Antonio is also committed to encouraging and contributing to the development and maintenance of the local community infrastructure, like schools, housing, roads etc.

Environmental protection

The Hacienda de San Antonio and its Ranch “El Jabali” carry out various practices and involve in local initiatives to protect the environment by:

  • Encouraging self-sustaining systems using local and renewable resources and diminishing or eliminating the use of non-renewable resources.
  • Encouraging and innovating sustainable practices in our organic agriculture, horticulture, orchards and coffee plantation.
  • Encouraging and innovating sustainable practices of free range livestock, chickens, pigs, goats.
  • Encouraging appropriate and sustainable use of the local environment and with the local government have protected the local wildlife through programs and the banning of hunting.
  • Preserving the local watershed and the natural fresh water springs utilizing the water supply from our local spring. Our fresh water system is supplied by a gravity-fed system with no electrical pumps, and with the use of an aqueduct dating back to 1904.
  • The incorporation of architectural design utilizing high ceilings, cross-ventilation, and floor fans for cooling the suites in the summer and chimneys in the winter. And not using any mechanical systems such as air conditioning.

Reforestation and Planting projects

The work is always in progress to expand our nursery with local plants, and also shade grown trees. Annual reforestation of approximately 800 planted trees. The same effort is dedicated to organic coffee plants: they are planting over 10,000 coffee plants every year.
