JAPAN RAIL PASS
Japan Railway (JR) trains are among the best in the world: very punctual, fast, clean, frequent and comfortable. The Japan Rail Pass allows you complete freedom to travel around Japan and allows you to use any JR service including the very fast Shinkansen (except the new NOZOMI). When you arrive in Japan you will present your JRPass purchase order, along with your passport, at one of the JR Travel Service Centres, located at major stations as well as Narita and Kansai airports. To study the timetable of trains to be booked at the time of activation: www.hyperdia.com.
Breakfast. Full day at leisure. Free lunch and dinner.
We recommend a visit to the Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine, famous for its impressive tunnel formed by thousands of vermilion torii, which winds its way from the temple to the top of Mount Inari, 233 metres above sea level, through dense forest. Continue with the same local train to Nara, to admire the Todaiji Temple with its imposing bronze Buddha, the Daibutsu; the Kasuga Shrine, adorned with over 3000 stone and bronze lanterns; the Horyuji Temple and the characteristic “Deer Park”, populated by free-roaming deer. In Kyoto you cannot miss: the Kiyomizu Temple, with its panoramic terrace offering a splendid view over the city; the Sanjusangendo Temple; the famous Kinkakuji Golden Pavilion; the Nijo Castle and the charming historical quarter of Gion.
Breakfast. Departure by train, using your Japan Rail Pass for Kanazawa. Arrival and accommodation at Daiwa Roynet Hotel, standard room.
Afternoon at leisure for sightseeing. We recommend starting your visit with the Kenrokuen Garden, one of Japan's most famous gardens where you can watch and participate in the tea ceremony inside the Shiguri-tei house. Don't miss an afternoon visit to the Nagamachi Samurai House and the Higashi Chayagai district, a neat row of tea rooms run by “geisha”. If you are lucky, you will be able to get inside the house of Geisha Shima.
Note: plan to pack a hand luggage with enough for 2 nights as the main luggage travels separately and arrives directly in Tokyo.
Breakfast. Full day at leisure for individual visits. Overnight stay in Kaga Onsen at one of Japan's finest ecoluxury ryokan: The Kayotei, accommodation in a Japanese-style room. Traditional dinner included and overnight stay.
We recommend taking the Nohi Bus from Kanazawa Station to Shirakawago. In Ogimachi you can admire the characteristic gassho-zukuri houses, with steeply sloping thatched roofs, designed to withstand heavy winter snowfall and similar in shape to clasped hands in prayer. In the early afternoon, return to Kanazawa by the same bus and continue to Kaga Onsen by taxi or public transport.
