The Great Summer Migration with extension to Zanzibar

10 days

from 4.750 euro

A balanced itinerary for those who want to experience the unique thrill of a safari without sacrificing a few days of relaxation on the white beaches of Zanzibar. The program combines Tanzania's two main parks, the Ngorongoro Crater, a unique ecosystem, and the Serengeti Park, the scene of the great migration, i.e., the transhumance of herbivorous animals that takes place every year from one territory to another, in conjunction with the pressure exerted by large herds on pastures following the rainy season in search of fresh grass. Between April and June, the animals migrate in small groups towards the Western Corridor, forming long lines in motion. From July to October, they advance northwards to the northern Serengeti and the Masai Mara, where the famous river crossings take place.

Tour itinerary

Day 1, Kilimanjaro – Arusha

Cena libera e pernottamento.

Day 2, Arusha – Ngorongoro/Karatu

After an early breakfast, departure for Ngorongoro. Picnic lunch en route.

Today you will descend into the crater, a huge volcanic caldera formed about two and a half million years ago by the collapse of the now inactive volcano. A twenty-kilometer-wide amphitheater with six-hundred-meter-high walls that is home to an incredible number of animals, including the “big five”: elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, and rhino. The latter, although present in the Serengeti, where it is rarely seen and only from a distance, can be easily observed in the crater. The spectacle continues with wildebeests, buffalos, cheetahs, zebras, hyenas and more, as well as a wide variety of birds, including thousands of pink flamingos, buzzards, hawks, ostriches and eagles. In a way, the crater offers everything the animals need, a sort of paradise on earth, but it can also be a source of major and bloody struggles for survival.

At the end of the day, transfer to the lodge located in Karatu. Dinner and overnight stay.

Day 3, Karatu/Ngorongoro – Central Serengeti

After breakfast, departure for Serengeti Park, known for being the scene of the Great Migration, i.e., the transhumance of herbivorous animals that takes place every year from one territory to another, in conjunction with the pressure exerted by large herds on pastures, following the cycle of rains: the pastures are depleted and the herds must move to seek new food sources.

The phenomenon affects the park all year round except for September and October, when the lack of rain forces the herds to stop and graze in the Masai Mara, on the border with Kenya, before returning to central Serengeti in November, following the light rains. During the journey, stop to visit a Masai village.

Arrival at the camp in time for lunch. In the afternoon, first safari in Tanzania's most important park. Dinner and overnight stay at the lodge.

Day 4, Central Serengeti – Northern Serengeti or Western Serengeti

Breakfast at the camp and check-out. Transfer to the lodge in the Northern Serengeti.

Photo safari along the way. Arrival at the camp located near the Mara River in the Kogatende area. After lunch, weather permitting, another photo safari will take place. Upon return, dinner and overnight stay at the camp.

PLEASE NOTE: from April to July, the transfer is to the Western Serengeti.

Day 5, Northern Serengeti (or Western Serengeti)

Breakfast at the lodge. Morning and afternoon photo safari in the Serengeti to admire the great migration.

Meals at the camp, overnight stay.
