A&k Sanctuary Retreats Philanthropy is committed to ensuring access to safe drinking water for Maasai students in Kenya through the Safe Water for Schools programme. In collaboration with partner Vestergaard (LifeStraw), the programme provides water filters to remote schools where access to safe water sources is extremely limited.
To date, eleven Maasai schools have received LifeStraw community filters, which represent a sustainable and non-invasive solution for providing clean water to students. Each filter can purify up to 100,000 litres of water, enough to cover a school's needs for three to five years. The system requires no electricity or batteries and uses no chemicals. It is designed to remove at least 99.99% of bacteria, viruses and protozoan parasites, thus protecting children from disease and contributing to healthier and more regular development.
Ensuring access to safe drinking water is one of the most effective ways to generate a lasting positive impact in communities.
Lodge guests also have the opportunity to actively contribute to the project by purchasing a LifeStraw filter before their trip and participating in its installation at the school. They will also be able to attend a practical demonstration of how the filter works, given by the AKP coordinator present at the lodge.
