The school feeding programme stems from a simple but fundamental reality: a hungry child cannot learn. In Africa, around 23 million children attend school on an empty stomach, with serious consequences for their concentration, growth and brain development. By providing regular meals at school, AKP helps to combat malnutrition, increases school attendance and supports families who are often unable to provide adequate nutrition for their children.
The cost of each meal is remarkably low, just 21 pence a day, but the impact is enormous: a fed child is a child who can learn, grow and build a better future. AKP canteens are therefore a vital investment in the education and health of local communities.
