Local Materials: siFollowing the flood of 2025, the reconstruction of Jaci’s Private Lodge was conceived as an opportunity to preserve the character and heritage of the lodge founded by the family, whilst strengthening its ties with the Madikwe region and local communities. Where possible, existing structures, materials and furnishings were restored and reused, allowing the lodge’s history to continue into a new chapter. The reconstruction project, which began in March 2025, was completed with the lodge’s reopening on 1 July 2026. The contemporary African design draws inspiration from the cultures and traditions of the Setswana people, as well as from the colours, patterns and natural textures of the Madikwe landscape. The guest areas feature woven and clay-dyed fabrics, sculptural ceramics, works of art and African handicrafts. Furniture, artworks, decorative elements and finishes were created by, or in collaboration with, South African artists, craftspeople and suppliers, helping to promote and support local craftsmanship, both traditional and contemporary. The project involved South African designers, builders, joiners, potters, textile producers and other professionals, engaged in construction, restoration, joinery, and the production of furniture, textiles, ceramics and decorative finishes. The Setswana language is also an integral part of the lodge experience. The spaces and accommodation are named after traditional terms, such as Thutlwa, meaning giraffe, Kubu, meaning hippopotamus, and Nare, meaning buffalo. Although the main phase of the redevelopment is complete, sourcing locally, promoting South African craftsmanship and cultural interpretation remain an integral part of the project.
WHAT CAN YOU DO?
Guests engage with this project through the architecture, interiors, local crafts, Setswana names, cultural storytelling and culinary experiences. Even the youngest guests can learn about the local culture through the Jaci’s Pups Ranger Course, during which they learn some basic words and phrases in Setswana and take part in activities focusing on wildlife, tracking techniques and an understanding of Madikwe’s natural environment.
Jaci’s Private Lodge is located in the Madikwe Game Reserve, in South Africa’s North West Province, in a malaria-free area. The lodge offers an immersive nature experience, characterised by a relaxed atmosphere, warm hospitality and a strong connection with safari. The reserve is known for its varied landscapes, the quality of its guides and its rich wildlife, including the so-called “Madikwe Top 10”: in addition to the Big Five, the reserve is home to cheetahs, African wild dogs, hyenas, hippos and giraffes.
Family-run and with a long history in the reserve, Jaci’s combines colourful, characterful spaces with an informal design. Following the 2025 flood, the lodge was completely rebuilt and reimagined as a single property, while keeping at its heart the philosophy of sharing the bush, spending time together and creating lasting memories.
The Main Lodge is the heart of the property and includes several safari lounges, outdoor decks, an open kitchen, dining areas and spaces dedicated to relaxation. Around the lodge are lookout points, decks and hidden corners from which to observe wildlife in different settings, from elevated areas to waterholes.
The property also features swimming pools, wellness spaces, a river-path walk within the fenced property and areas designed for evenings around the fire. The Marico River runs along the lodge’s boundary with the Limpopo, adding another natural element to the experience. The range of accommodation, including 10 Safari Suites and 3 private villas, offers options ranging from stays for couples to larger, more private solutions for families and groups.
