The aguaje palm conservation and reforestation project in the indigenous community of Nueva Arica, in the Loreto region of Peru, promotes the sustainable use of this resource, which is fundamental to the Amazonian ecosystem. The local population is trained in the correct techniques for harvesting by climbing, in the use of the fruit and shoots for the production of fibres for handicrafts and textiles, and in the practices of reforestation of the aguajales. The programme includes a management plan that monitors the density of palms per hectare, the area of habitat conserved or restored, and the economic benefits generated. Twenty-two community members have been trained in climbing workshops and equipped with safety devices. The protection of aguajales is essential for biodiversity and carbon sequestration, contributing to the fight against climate change and providing economic support to local families.
