The Torre Salsa Oriented Nature Reserve, named for the historic watchtower that dominates the area, is a protected area of 760 hectares that extends almost 7 km along the sea. Established in 2000 and managed by the WWF, this natural oasis is famous for its extraordinary landscape and rich biodiversity.
The reserve offers a mosaic of breathtaking landscapes, encompassing valuable ecosystems. The hinterland, with its natural terraces, is nestled between the wild, mountainous areas of Monte Stella and a coastline characterised by stretches of golden sand, interrupted by spectacular marl walls and sheer cliffs with turquoise and emerald hues. The landscape is enriched with a great variety of endemic botanical species, including over 20 types of wild orchids and the fragrant sea lily. The fauna is equally fascinating: porcupines, foxes, peregrine falcons, lizards, butterflies, herons, gulls and numerous other species of water birds populate these pristine habitats.
However, the real stars of the reserve are the Caretta caretta sea turtles, which choose this precious coastline to nest, making it a symbol of Sicily's conservation and natural beauty.
