Bayettes is a private nature reserve covering over 400 hectares, situated in the picturesque Marmore Valley, on the right-hand side of the Matterhorn valley. A high-altitude area stretching from 2,000 to 3,300 metres above sea level, where the mountains still retain their most authentic and untamed character. Here, amongst historic pastures, ancient shepherds’ huts and landscapes shaped over millennia by the geological processes that formed the Alps and the Matterhorn massif, nature continues to express itself in accordance with its own balance.
The reserve is home to a natural heritage of extraordinary value: chamois, ibex, marmots, eagles, hawks and numerous pollinating insects live in the wild within an alpine ecosystem rich in biodiversity. Fir trees, pines, rhododendrons and many other native species help to preserve the ecological balance of this unspoilt environment, safeguarded for generations by the Neyroz-Feroli family.
Our collaboration with the Hotel Hermitage stems from a shared desire to protect and promote this natural and cultural heritage. Together, we have devised an interpretative trail that guides visitors along the path leading up from Avouil to the Bobba Bivouac, transforming a hike into an immersive experience of discovering the local area.
Through a collaborative process of research, content selection and design, we have created a signage system that brings the landscape to life in all its dimensions. The panels guide visitors as they discover the geology of the Matterhorn’s metamorphic rocks, the seasonal changes in high-altitude flora and fauna, the pastoral traditions that have shaped these places for centuries, and the challenges that climate change now poses to Alpine ecosystems.
For us, Bayettes is a concrete example of how hospitality can become a tool for conservation and raising awareness. It is not simply a matter of protecting a natural area, but of creating opportunities for learning that enable visitors to understand the profound value of the landscape around them, thereby developing a more informed and respectful relationship with the environment.
During the summer season, guests have the opportunity to explore the geological history of the Matterhorn, the evolution of the Alpine landscape, the traditions of the Aosta Valley and the delicate balances that govern high-altitude biodiversity. It is an experience that invites you to slow down, observe and reconnect with nature.
