Proving that ecotourism is a responsible development, Al Tarfa shoulders a leading role to upgrade the natives’ living standards and better protect their scarce natural resources. The lodge’s staff members are all from the nearby villages which works as a contribution to solve the problems of unemployment in those remote areas. In October 2009, Al Tarfa sponsored a medical convoy to Dakhla oasis with the cooperation cooperation of Ali el Mofti Society, a qualified team of eye doctors. They examined and treated 640 needy cases and completed 63 successful “major” eye surgeries in just three days.
