LOCAL SOCIO-ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

Project description

The hotels in Santo Stefano di Sessanio and Le Grotte della Civita di Matera support the Sextantio Onlus Foundation which has developed several projects in Africa. In Rwanda with the project "Mutuelle de Santé", Sextantio Onlus has made it possible, in 10 years, that 81% of the population had access to health care, paying health insurance to families with low incomes. To have health insurance means to be able to undergo medical examinations, carry out blood tests and obtain medicines for the most common diseases. In 2019, the Foundation launched a new project on the island of Nkombo, on the border between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The goal is to create the concept of a widespread hotel on the island, inhabited by a population born from the union between Congolese men and Rwandan women. Men are dedicated to fishing, agriculture and sheep farming, while women still live in conditions of semi-slavery. The project provides for the construction of huts at the northern end of the island and to open it to tourism, so that this will contribute to the economic and social development of the territory, without altering the subtle socio-cultural balance. The tourist experience is focused on local anthropological elements, very far from the African resort's typical offert.
