Buy, Throw, Stay in Touch: the Saruni Basecamp Seedballs

BIOSPHERE CONSERVATION

Project description

“Seedballs” is a project that aims to efficiently and at low cost reintroduce trees and herbaceous species in degraded areas of Kenya. Reintroduction takes place through the dispersal over large areas of indigenous seeds supplied and certified by the Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI). The seeds in their original state are covered with charcoal dust mixed with nutrients called "Biochar" which protects them from predators (birds, rodents and insects) and weather conditions. Direct seeding reduces transplant shock and helps young trees develop stronger roots, thus helping Mother Nature rehabilitate land so damaged by human activity where natural reforestation would be unlikely or even impossible. Saruni Wild partners with Seedballs Kenya and promotes this initiative as an activity during the stay. Guests can purchase a box of seedballs at the camp and then throw them into the degraded areas during game drives.
