Benedictine Abbey of San Giovanni

CULTURAL HERITAGE

Project description

Borghi dell'Eremo stands at an ancient crossroads that guaranteed the Etruscan people safe passage between Chiusi and Perugia. In this area, known as Monte Reale, an abbey called San Giovanni dell'Eremo was founded in the 12th century, where Camaldolese monks dedicated themselves to glass fusion according to a technique inherited from the Romans. Over the centuries the abbey became a prosperous estate from which Curia derived income from logging and agricultural production, until it became a private property of the various Moretti, Cofano and Galletti families that have succeeded each other on this territory. The Galletti Family, current owners began the restoration of the  property starting with the farm by recovering hundreds of abandoned olive trees and planting new fruit trees. Then began the recovery of "La Crocicchia" with the aim of creating an exclusive location for events and weddings. In 2016 the family decided to renovate the ancient abbey and the adjoining farmhouse to create a hospitality, catering and wellness area. In 2021, Borgo San Giovanni dell'Eremo opens its doors, offering elegant yet human-scale hospitality that puts human relations and quality of services first, as well as an extraordinary revival of Umbrian cuisine.
